Iran-US Negotiation Talks: The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, arrived in Islamabad on Saturday (local time) for high-stakes peace talks with the United States, Iranian state media reported.

According to state media, the delegation, led by Ghalibaf, includes Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi, Secretary of the Defence Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian, Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati, and several members of Parliament.

“Iran’s negotiating team led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, arrives in Islamabad. Accompanying Qalibaf are Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Defence Council Secretary Ali Akbar Ahmadian, Central Bank Chief Abdolnaser Hemmati, and several lawmaker," the Iranian Embassy in India said in a post on X.

The two planes linked to the Iranian government – IRAN04 and IRAN05 – have now landed at an airfield near Pakistan’s capital, according to flight-tracking site Flightradar24.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed the arrival of the delegation in Islamabad. The Foreign Ministry said that the officials were received by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Army Chief Asim Munir and other high-ranking Pakistani officials.

Iranian media have further said that negotiations would proceed only if Washington accepted Tehran’s “preconditions."

US Delegation On Its Way

Meanwhile, the United States delegation, led By Vice President JD Vance departed for Islamabad on Friday for weekend talks with Iran. Ahead of his departure, Vance warned Iran not to try to “play" Washington.

Despite the temporary truce struck between the foes, deep disagreements remain as to the way forward in talks aimed at transforming the fragile ceasefire into a lasting peace deal.

Vance, speaking to reporters before taking off for Islamabad, said “if the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we’re certainly willing to extend the open hand."

But “if they’re going to try to play us, then they’re going to find the negotiating team is not that receptive," he said.

What’s On Agenda?

Official sources have said that the talks in Islamabad will cover several sensitive points, including Iran’s nuclear enrichment and the free flow of trade through the crucial oil conduit, the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran Sets Terms For US Peace Talks

Ahead of his visit, Ghalibaf set two key conditions for the much-anticipated talks in Islamabad—calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets.

“Two of the measures mutually agreed upon between the parties have yet to be implemented: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets prior to the commencement of negotiations," wrote Ghalibaf in a post on X. “These two matters must be fulfilled before negotiations begin."

While Pakistani mediators are working around the clock at the requisitioned Serena Hotel, the atmosphere remains combustible. The urgency of the talks, described as “make or break" by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has also been underscored by a series of sharp warnings from the White House, signalling that while the diplomats are talking, the American military remains on a hair-trigger alert.
