Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was in a relationship with a man from another community

A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district for allegedly strangling his 21-year-old sister in a suspected honour killing. The incident was reported from the Matawali Patti area under the Asmoli police station limits.

The deceased, Roop Jahan, was in a relationship with a 22-year-old man from the same village, identified as Shivam Saini. According to police, the accused, Jane Alam, informed authorities about the incident himself.

Additional Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Singh said that late on Thursday night, Jane Alam made a PCR call stating that he had killed his sister. He was taken into custody.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was in a relationship with a man from another community. Reports state that she had earlier left home and stayed with her partner’s relatives in Amroha district. She was later brought back by her family after intervention by villagers.

Police said the accused allegedly strangled her on Thursday night when other family members were away.

The victim’s father, Nausher, defended his son’s actions.

“Roop’s conduct was unbecoming. She was in love with Shivam Saini and wanted to marry him. The villagers were making fun of me. My son has no remorse. It was correct to kill the girl who insulted us. He killed her in a fit of rage," he was quoted by PTI as saying.

“We are Muslims, and he is a Saini. How could we have performed the marriage? The matter would have been different had the boy belonged to our community," he added.

Police said a case has been registered against the accused based on a complaint filed by the mother of the deceased’s partner. Authorities are also questioning other family members to determine whether anyone else was involved.

Further investigation is underway.
