Dindigul: The district cybercrime police have arrested a 30-year-old man from Telangana for cheating a woman of ₹17.25 lakh after befriending her on an online gaming application.The accused, Gangadhar, was a resident of Karimnagar in Telangana. According to police, the complainant had downloaded 'YoYo' app in May 2024 to play Ludo.
She befriended a user named "Sumesh" through the app's chat room.After gaining her confidence, Gangadhar claimed that he was in a dire financial crisis and needed money for his sister's heart surgery. Falling for the ruse, the woman transferred ₹17,25,650 to him in multiple installments via UPI transaction. After receiving the money, the accused blocked her number and became unreachable. Following a complaint from the woman, superintendent of police S Jeyakumar ordered a probe. By following the money, the cybercrime unit identified the suspect. As the accused was frequently travelling abroad, a look out circular (LOC) was issued against him. Subsequently, Delhi airport police intercepted him upon his arrival from Qatar on June 15.Inspector Renuka and her team travelled to Delhi and took custody of the accused. Gangadhar was produced before a court here on Sunday and was remanded in judicial custody.
