The Congress picked VD Satheesan as Kerala CM after weighing his role as the UDF’s principal anti-LDF campaign face, strong cadre backing and wider acceptability.

Ending days of intense speculation and internal consultations, the Congress on Thursday picked VD Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a sweeping victory in the Assembly elections.

The announcement was made in New Delhi by AICC leaders Deepa Dasmunshi, Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik.

Satheesan’s elevation came after a prolonged round of deliberations involving the party high command, Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, state leaders and UDF allies.

While senior leaders KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala were also in contention, multiple political and organisational factors ultimately worked in Satheesan’s favour.

FACE OF THE UDF’S ANTI-LDF CAMPAIGN

One of the biggest reasons behind Satheesan’s selection was his role as the principal face of the UDF’s campaign against the ruling Left government over the last five years.

As Leader of the Opposition since 2021, Satheesan consistently led the Congress attack on the Pinarayi Vijayan government both inside and outside the Assembly.

News agency ANI reported that he emerged as a “prominent face" of the UDF campaign and remained a vocal critic of the state government on political and governance issues.

Political observers cited by several Kerala-based media outlets have noted that Satheesan successfully repositioned the Congress as an aggressive opposition force after the UDF’s 2021 defeat.

His visibility during protests, Assembly interventions and issue-based campaigns helped consolidate the party’s grassroots workers ahead of the 2026 election.

The Congress leadership is understood to have viewed continuity between the campaign face and the chief ministerial choice as politically beneficial after the UDF’s emphatic mandate.

STRONG ACCEPTABILITY AMONG CADRE AND ALLIES

Satheesan also enjoyed considerable backing from party workers and sections of the UDF alliance.

Soon after the announcement, celebrations broke out across Kerala, especially in his Paravur constituency in Ernakulam district, where supporters burst crackers and distributed sweets.

News agency PTI reported that UDF allies too had backed his candidature during the selection process.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph publicly welcomed the decision, calling it “a very good decision".

Within the Congress organisation, Satheesan has long been seen as a leader with stronger connections among booth-level workers and district leaders compared to some of his rivals.

His rise through student politics and Youth Congress structures added to his image as a “cadre leader" rather than solely a Delhi-backed face.

Several Malayalam media reports over the past week suggested that feedback collected by AICC observers from newly elected MLAs also reflected broad support for Satheesan.

ELECTORAL TRACK RECORD AND CLEAN IMAGE

Satheesan’s consistent electoral performance was another major factor.

He won the Paravur Assembly constituency for the sixth consecutive time in 2026 and has represented the seat continuously since 2001.

His victory margin of over 20,000 votes reinforced his standing as one of Congress’s strongest mass leaders in Kerala.

Political analysts quoted in recent reports also pointed to Satheesan’s relatively clean public image and his attempts to project administrative seriousness during his tenure as opposition leader.

In a state where corruption allegations and governance debates dominated the campaign narrative, that perception is believed to have strengthened his case before the central leadership.

GENERATIONAL SHIFT WITHIN KERALA CONGRESS

The Congress high command also appeared keen on signalling a generational transition in Kerala politics.

At 61, Satheesan represents a younger leadership layer compared to several senior Congress veterans in the state.

Over the last few years, Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly pushed for organisational restructuring and generational change across state units.

Satheesan’s elevation is being viewed by many within the party as part of that broader transition plan.

Unlike some senior Congress figures associated with factional rivalries of earlier decades, Satheesan managed to cultivate an image of relative organisational balance.

Reports over the past week suggested the leadership believed he could provide a longer-term political face for the party in Kerala.

HIGH COMMAND CONSULTATIONS FAVOURED CONSENSUS

The final decision came only after extensive consultations by the Congress leadership.

Rahul Gandhi met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for around 40 minutes on Wednesday, after which the party indicated that internal discussions had been completed.

The leadership held wider consultations with MLAs, alliance leaders and all three major contenders before arriving at the final call.

The Congress-led UDF had won 102 seats in the 140-member Assembly, while the Congress itself secured 63 seats.

Party insiders quoted by multiple media organisations said the leadership ultimately preferred a consensus-oriented choice who had already led the opposition campaign and enjoyed wider acceptability among MLAs and allies.

With the announcement now formalised, the Congress Legislature Party is set to meet in Thiruvananthapuram before the UDF stakes claim to form the next government in Kerala.
