Mitsubishi eyes Bengal for semiconductor unit

Kolkata: Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Group is interested in setting up a semiconductor unit in Bengal. Two representatives of Mitsubishi Chemical Group, Teruo Fujita and Tomofumi Koyama, called on industry minister Tapas Roy and finance minister Swapan Dasgupta to discuss the project.This was disclosed by Roy during an interactive session of the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry titled “How to Unleash Growth Potential of Bengal’s Economy”.Roy pointed out that the Mitsubishi representatives would visit again in the fourth week of this month for further discussions on the project. He added that the Japanese giant has been offered land in Durgapur and Panagarh for the purpose. “The land requirement is not very large, and it will be arranged.

We shall encourage GCC and semiconductor projects,” he said.Claiming that the previous govt lacked an industrial policy, Roy said the new administration must start afresh. The draft industrial policy will be announced soon, followed by a start-up policy within the next three months.When asked about fiscal sops, he added that the govt is working on an industrial incentive policy as well as a power policy. Incidentally, during the earlier regime, the industrial incentive policy was revoked in 2025.

“We want to make Bengal a manufacturing hub by 2031. Our focus will be the promotion of large industries along with infrastructure like industrial corridors, mining, logistics and industrial parks.

We will transition from a permission-based to a facilitation-based govt,” he added.The minister was also hopeful that the Centre would announce a financial package for the state. “When I was in Delhi recently, I heard that PM Narendra Modi has asked Union ministers to think about Bengal,” he said.

Roy added that during his next visit to New Delhi, he would take up the issue of direct flights from Kolkata to Europe and the USA with the civil aviation ministry.Lux Group to set up second knitwear unitAshok Todi-led Lux Group will set up a second manufacturing unit for knitwear products in Dankuni, where the group already operates an existing facility. The new unit will be inaugurated by chief minister Suvendu Adhikari.
