Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal clash in a decisive Indian Super League title race, with Kolkata Derby stakes high.

Defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant are all set to take on arch-rival East Bengal in what will be a decisive match in the title race for the 2025-26 season of the Indian Super League, on Sunday, May 17, at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

For years, the derby has been one-sided in the ISL era. East Bengal endured a tough run after joining the top flight, finishing ninth on four occasions and 11th once across five seasons.

Their record against Mohun Bagan has been even more dismal, managing just one draw while losing the other nine of their 10 meetings.

But this season feels different. Under Spanish coach Óscar Bruzón, East Bengal have evolved from perennial underachievers into genuine title challengers. The gap between Kolkata’s two giants has narrowed and, for the first time in years, the derby feels poised.

The Red-and-Gold brigade are aiming to win their first national top-flight league title in over two decades, having last lifted the then National Football League crown in the 2003-04 season under Subhas Bhowmick.

Bruzón, who took charge during a derby in 2024 just hours after arriving in Kolkata, is now on the brink of completing a brilliant turnaround before leaving the club at the end of the season on May 31.

There has been little to separate the two teams this season, with both teams collecting 22 points from 11 games through six victories, four draws and one loss each.

But East Bengal lead the standings thanks to a superior goal difference of 18.
