As President Trump touches down for the first U.S. presidential visit to Beijing in nearly a decade, the "Future Leaders" of China steal the spotlight.

'Most Cringe Awkward Display Ever': Trump And Xi Meet Amidst A Sea Of Waving Children And Internet Has Opinions
The red carpet was literally rolled out in Beijing as President Donald Trump arrived at the Great Hall of the People on May 14, 2026, for a high-stakes superpower summit with President Xi Jinping. While the agenda is packed with heavy-hitters like trade barriers, Taiwan, and the conflict in Iran, the most viral moment of the day belonged to the hundreds of Chinese schoolchildren who greeted the leaders with an explosion of energy and colour.
The atmosphere at the Great Hall was electric, featuring military honour guards and some 300 Chinese youths decked out in white and robin’s egg blue—deliberately matched to the paint job of Air Force One. The children jumped and cheered, “Welcome, welcome! Warm welcome!" as the two leaders walked past.
On X, the spectacle immediately polarized users. Supporters were deeply moved by the symbolism, with one post noting, “Two great leaders matching magnetically while the future leaders hail them wow so powerful with real meaning 💪 Congratulations." Others focused on the infectious joy of the kids, commenting, “I love the outfits the children have on … Awesome job Chinese parents have to be so proud…. So happy and I am sure they will all need a nice cool drink and a nap – the jumping – ohhh to be young again… That was AMAZING… the energy…. Thank you CHINA for a welcoming so kind hearted."
However, the “carefully choreographed pageantry" drew sharp criticism from those who felt the display was over the top. One skeptical user called it “the most cringe awkward display I’ve ever seen," while another added it was “cringe that they knew this would appeal to him instead of repulsing him." Some even questioned the use of children for statecraft, noting it felt “kinda gross parading all those kids out there to welcome trump instead of soldiers."
One user also commented that the enthusiasm from the younger generation may be rooted in tangible policy changes. “In August 2025, Trump announced a plan to allow 600,000 Chinese students to receive visas to study in the U.S. That’s why they’re so excited."
