Hiba Rana, daughter of late Urdu poet Munawwar Rana, has filed an FIR accusing her husband of giving her triple talaq and subjecting her to domestic violence and dowry harassment.

According to the complaint, Hiba married Syed Mohammad Saqib in 2013 as per Sunni Muslim customs. At the time of the nikah, gold and diamond jewellery along with Rs 10 lakh were given as dowry.

She has alleged that despite this, her in-laws continued to demand an additional Rs 20 lakh. Hiba has also accused her father-in-law, Syed Haseeb Ahmed, of demanding money and a flat as dowry.

Hiba has alleged that her husband frequently assaulted her and attempted to kill her on several occasions.

The complaint states that on April 9, 2025, in the presence of her sister Arshia Rana alias Tina, Saqib abused Hiba and pronounced triple talaq. She has alleged that she was then forcibly thrown out of the house.

Hiba has also claimed that her husband illegally confined their two children inside the house after driving her out.

An FIR has been registered against the husband and in-laws. Sahadatganj police have started an investigation into the case.

Triple Talaq unconstitutional

The Supreme Court declared triple talaq unconstitutional on August 22, 2017, in the Shayara Bano v. Union of India judgment, stating it violated Articles 14, 15, and 21.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 makes instant triple talaq illegal and invalid. If a husband pronounces triple talaq, he can face up to three years in jail and a fine.

The police can act on a complaint by the wife or her relatives, and bail can be given only by a Magistrate after hearing the wife. The law also ensures that the wife receives maintenance for herself and her children, and that custody of minor children is decided by the Magistrate.
