State’s celebrated event awaits a revival

Vijayapura: A city that once attracted music lovers and tourists from across India and abroad is still waiting for the revival of one of Karnataka’s most celebrated cultural events — the Navarasapur Cultural Festival. For nearly a decade, successive assurances to revive the festival remained unfulfilled. While events such as Hampi Utsav, Chalukya Utsav, Ranna Utsav, Kittur Utsav, Kadamba Utsav and Bengaluru Habba continue to receive govt patronage, Navarasapur has languished for want of political will, funding and timely planning.Inspired by the cultural vision of Ibrahim Adil Shah II, the festival became synonymous with Vijayapura’s identity.

Navarasapur was conceived by Adil Shah II as a “city of nine emotions” dedicated to music and the arts. The festival has hosted renowned maestros of Hindustani classical music and percussion over the years.Programmes are often staged near the historic Sangeet Mahal, echoing the royal court’s musical traditions.Traditionally held between Feb and May, it featured leading classical and light music artistes and drew visitors from across the globe.

Along with enjoying performances, tourists explored the city’s architectural landmarks, while residents welcomed relatives and friends to share in the celebrations. After decades of neglect, the Navarasapur festival was revived in the 1980s, only to fall silent once again.District minister MB Patil has now announced that the festival will be held in Aug. However, local observers note that no organising committee has been constituted, no govt grant has been sanctioned, and preparations — normally requiring at least two months to secure leading performers — have yet to begin.Residents argue that the monsoon should not become another reason for postponement. They believe the festival’s revival would not only fulfil the city’s long-standing cultural aspirations but also provide a prestigious platform for emerging local talent alongside acclaimed artistes.
