Canada has relaxed its citizenship laws, making it easier for people with Canadian ancestry to claim citizenship, a move that is already driving a sharp rise in applications.

The new rules remove the earlier restriction that limited citizenship by descent to only the first generation born outside Canada. Under the revised framework, children, grandchildren and even further generations of Canadians can now apply, provided they meet documentation requirements.

The change follows a 2023 court ruling that found the previous law unconstitutional, prompting Ottawa to widen eligibility and simplify access.

Know About Canada’s Updated Citizenship Policy

The updated policy introduces a key condition. For children born after December 15, 2025, the Canadian parent must have lived in the country for at least 1,095 days, or three years, before the child’s birth. This requirement is aimed at ensuring a tangible link to Canada.

The impact of the move is already visible as applications have surged, with thousands filed in early 2026 alone, putting pressure on processing timelines. Authorities say it currently takes around 10 months to process applications, though delays are likely as demand rises.

About Canadian Citizenship

Having a citizenship in Canada offers multiple benefits, including the right to live and work in the country, access to education, and visa-free travel to several nations. For many, it also serves as a strategic backup option amid global uncertainty.

Canada’s decision stands in contrast to some European countries that are tightening citizenship norms, signalling a more open approach to attracting people with historical ties to the country.

The policy shift is expected to benefit millions worldwide, particularly those with distant Canadian roots, as Ottawa positions itself as one of the more accessible destinations for dual citizenship.
