Neymar risks a 12-match ban for making sexist remarks about a referee, while other reports state Ancelotti has already ruled him out of Brazil's World Cup plans.

“Oh, Neymar…"

Once again, brilliance risks being overshadowed by controversy.

Neymar has landed himself in trouble following explosive remarks aimed at referee Savio Pereira Sampaio after Santos FC’s 2-0 win over Clube do Remo.

The fallout could be severe, with reports suggesting a potential 12-match suspension.

What Transpired On The Field

The flashpoint came late in the game when Neymar, already on edge, picked up his third yellow card in four matches, ruling him out of the upcoming clash against Flamengo.

Frustration quickly spilt over post-match.

“It’s very unfair because I was fouled from behind," Neymar said in the post-match interview.

“It’s very disloyal… it wasn’t the first time… so I only went over to complain to him, and I was booked straight away."

But it was what followed that escalated matters significantly.

“Anyway, Savio is always like that. I think he woke up… [laughs]… how do you say it… woke up on his period and came to the game like that today."

The comment has sparked widespread backlash and could invite disciplinary action under Brazil’s code of conduct.

There is precedent. Earlier this year, Red Bull Bragantino defender Gustavo Marques was handed a 12-match ban for sexist remarks directed at referee Daiane Muniz.

Neymar could face similar consequences.

Ancelotti Not in Favour of Neymar

The timing could hardly be worse.

Neymar has already been on the fringes of the national setup, having not featured for Brazil since his injury against Uruguay in October 2023. Injuries have limited him to just five appearances for Santos since his return in January 2025.

Now, reports suggest Carlo Ancelotti is unconvinced.

According to Sportv’s Andre Loffredo, the Brazil boss is prioritising consistency over reputation.

“He just doesn’t get the massive ‘fuss’ around the attacker’s name," the report noted.

More concerning for Neymar is that he is reportedly not even part of the preliminary pool being considered for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With the final squad set to be announced on May 18, a lengthy ban, if imposed, would only further damage his already fading chances.
