The Saudi Pro League issued a stern warning to Al Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo following his absence from the side’s win over Al Riyadh, due to differences with the club over their transfer market activities.
Ronaldo, who was unhappy with his club not roping in former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema, who made the switch from AL Ittihad to Al Hilal during the winter transfer window, and a spokesperson from the League warned the Portuguese star of the consequences of his actions.
“The Saudi Pro League is structured around a simple principle: every club operates independently under the same rules," a Saudi Pro League spokesperson said.
““Clubs have their own boards, their own executives and their own football leadership. Decisions on recruitment, spending and strategy sit with those clubs, within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance. That framework applies equally across the league."
“Cristiano has been fully engaged with Al-Nassr since his arrival and has played an important role in the club’s growth and ambition," he spokesperson added.
“Like any elite competitor, he wants to win. But no individual – however significant – determines decisions beyond their own club."
“Recent transfer activity demonstrates that independence clearly. One club strengthened in a particular way. Another chose a different approach. Those were club decisions, taken within approved financial parameters," he added.
In a massive episode of fan banter, fans of Al-Hilal posted notices across certain streets in Saudi Arabia after the 40-year-old was absent from Al Nassr’s latest game that read, “This is a forty-year-old who is going through the obligation of excessive crying, and his family is looking for him."
The episode has thrown Ronaldo’s future at the club into question as the forward has 18 months remaining on his contract with the Saudi-based club, which also includes a release clause of around the £50m mark.
