“About 8 percent of presidents are shot at… nobody told me it’s a dangerous profession." That’s how US President Donald Trump reacted after a shooting scare near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington.

The comment, delivered shortly after the incident, quickly spread online. Trump also noted that around 5.8 percent of US presidents have been killed while in office, referencing the risks tied to the role.

The remark came after a tense moment at the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner was being held. A suspected gunman fired shots near the ballroom area, triggering panic and an immediate security response.

Secret Service agents moved quickly.

Attendees were guided to safety as security teams secured the venue and contained the situation. The suspect was later taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing into how he managed to get close to a high-security event.

Trump addressed the situation soon after, describing the attacker as a “lone wolf," a “whack job," and “crazy," and saying the individual was carrying multiple weapons.

During the confrontation, one officer was shot at close range but survived due to protective gear. “He was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job," Trump said.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is usually a routine, high-profile gathering that brings together media and political figures. Incidents like this are rare, especially given the level of security typically in place.

But the episode briefly shifted the tone of the evening.

For now, the focus remains on the investigation. But Trump’s comment has added a second layer to the story, turning it into something people are discussing beyond just the incident itself.
