A video of Vipin Bhati, accused of burning his wife Nikki to death over dowry demands, had earlier gone viral, purportedly showing him being thrashed in 2024. Now in police custody after being injured in an encounter, Bhati claims innocence, while Nikki’s family alleges he set her on fire.

Vipin Spotted With Another Woman

According to media reports, in 2024, Vipin Bhati was seen driving in Delhi with another woman when Nikki’s family members confronted him and beat him on the road. A video of this incident went viral on social media.

Vipin Bhati–Noida Police Encounter

On Sunday, while being taken to recover evidence, Bhati allegedly tried to flee after snatching a sub-inspector’s gun and firing at the police team. This led to an encounter between Bhati and Noida Police at Sirsa crossing in Greater Noida. Police said Bhati attempted to escape from custody, and when he ignored warnings to stop, he was shot in the leg before being arrested again.

According to police, Bhati was being taken to Kasna Police Station for questioning when he attempted to escape custody. He was chased to the Sirsa intersection, where officers opened fire, hitting him in the leg. The incident has since sparked widespread discussion on social media.

Affairs With Multiple Women

Nikki’s sister Kanchan alleged that Vipin Bhati was involved with several women and was once caught with another woman in Molarband, Delhi. She said tensions had been brewing between Nikki and her husband for over a week, as Nikki had recently uncovered Bhati’s extramarital affair, which became a frequent cause of conflict between them.

What Happened On August 21

Nikki was allegedly burnt alive by her husband and in-laws in Greater Noida over dowry, police said. The victim had been harassed since her marriage in 2016 despite dowry payments, with fresh demands of Rs 36 lakh made recently, her family alleged.

Her husband, Vipin Bhati, was arrested on Saturday and remanded to 14-day judicial custody. Bhati’s mother, Daya (55), who had been absconding, was also arrested. Disturbing videos of the incident show Nikki being assaulted and later collapsing with severe burn injuries. She succumbed on Thursday night.

An FIR has been lodged at Kasna Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, officials said.

Nikki’s father, Bhikahri Singh, said both his daughters were married into the Bhati family in 2016 and faced constant demands for money and luxury items. “Neither of the brothers work. Since marriage, they kept asking for vehicles and cash. We gave them a Scorpio and even set up a beauty parlour for Nikki because Vipin was unemployed, but he later stole money from it," Singh told PTI Videos.

Another relative added that Bhati had also demanded a Mercedes car or Rs 60 lakh in cash. Nikki’s mother said they had already provided gold, a motorcycle and a top-end Scorpio, yet the harassment continued.

Videos and testimonies have since emerged of the fatal assault. Nikki’s elder sister, Kanchan, who recorded the attack, accused Bhati and his family of murdering her sister over dowry. “They demanded Rs 36 lakh. They hit her on the head and neck, poured acid and set her on fire in front of her child," she told reporters, adding that she too was assaulted when she tried to intervene.

Nikki’s six-year-old son, who witnessed the attack, said his mother was doused with a liquid, slapped and then set ablaze with a lighter.

Police said they were alerted by Fortis Hospital about Nikki’s admission with severe burns, but she was declared dead before she could be shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.

Meanwhile an Instagram account, carrying Vipin Bhati’s display picture, surfaced with posts purportedly linked to him. In one of the posts, the user appeared to address Nikki directly, asking why she had left him without explanation and lamenting that the world now branded him a “killer."
