At least 175 women were allegedly sterilised after being made to lie on the ground during a mass sterilisation drive in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district, sparking outrage and concern over medical negligence.
The incident occurred at a family-planning camp held at the Bagh Community Health Centre on Friday, where around 180 women arrived with their children and relatives after being summoned early in the morning.
However, the facility reportedly lacked even basic arrangements, including drinking water, seating, beds and adequate shade.
According to locals, after the procedures, the women were made to lie on the ground itself. The women and their family members were not even provided drinking water, and many were seen struggling in the heat with small children. Relatives of the women demanded better facilities at the centre and an increase in the number of doctors.

Anganwadi and ASHA workers, who had brought the women to the camp, also admitted that basic facilities were lacking and that the women faced considerable trouble. They too said that the number of doctors should be increased to avoid such situations.
Bagh government hospital supervisor Basant Ajanare claimed that the private doctor hired for the camp was performing one sterilisation every two minutes. However, when questioned about the difficulties faced by the women, he avoided giving a direct response.
Bagh Block Medical Officer Virbhadra Singh acknowledged that more than 175 women were sterilised and that a private doctor had been hired as there was no surgeon available. On being asked about negligence in the camp, he also gave evasive replies.
The incident has raised serious questions about the quality of surgeries being conducted at the camp and the sensitivity of officials towards women’s health. Following the controversy, the health department has issued a show-cause notice to the Bagh BMO, but the larger question remains whether issuing a notice alone is sufficient in the face of such large-scale negligence.
