US President Donald Trump on Sunday issued a blunt ultimatum to Iran, warning that the United States could carry out military strikes on Iranian power plants if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.

In a post on Truth Social, the US President warned that if Tehran doesn’t open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, then Washington will “hit and obliterate" their several power plants, “starting with the biggest one."

“If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!" he said in his post on Truth Social.

Trump’s ultimatum to Iran to open the essential passageway came as the Starit has been put on a chokehold by Iranian forces since the start of the US-Israel attack on Iran and the latter’s counterattacks.

Earlier on Saturday, Trump said Iran was seeking a deal but indicated he was not interested in negotiations. “Their leadership is gone, their navy and air force are dead, they have absolutely no defense, and they want to make a deal. I don’t!" he wrote on Truth Social.

Trump’s warning came a day after he urged countries dependent on the Strait of Hormuz – a vital global energy corridor – to take over responsibility for its security. Trump had said that while the US could assist, it should not be necessary.

“The Hormuz Strait will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other Nations who use it — The United States does not! If asked, we will help these Countries in their Hormuz efforts, but it shouldn’t be necessary once Iran’s threat is eradicated. Importantly, it will be an easy Military Operation for them," he had said.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, carrying roughly a fifth of global oil supplies, with approximately 20 million barrels per day of crude oil and oil products transiting the waterway.

The conflict has reduced those flows to a trickle, pushing crude oil prices above $100 per barrel and prompting the International Energy Agency to describe the disruption as the largest in the history of the global oil market. The IEA has warned that in the absence of a swift resolution, the impacts on energy markets and economies are “set to become more and more severe."
