Acting as a mediator between the United States and Iran amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reportedly returned to Tehran on Monday. The Pakistani Minister is learnt to have held discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as communication channels between the two sides remain active.

Naqvi had returned from Tehran a day earlier and conveyed a list of Iranian demands to the United States, which Washington has allegedly called “insufficient." His latest visit is being viewed as part of ongoing backchannel and regional security talks involving Islamabad and Tehran.

Naqvi Engages In Key Diplomatic Talks

The developments have also triggered political debate within Pakistan, with questions being raised over the role of the civilian government in key diplomatic engagements. Reports suggest that Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir has taken the lead in handling sensitive regional negotiations, with Mohsin Naqvi emerging as a central figure in the discussions.

Notably, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif have remained largely absent from the high-profile diplomatic activity surrounding the Iran talks.

Naqvi’s increasing involvement in foreign and security-related negotiations has fuelled speculation about the growing influence of Pakistan’s military establishment over strategic decision-making, particularly amid heightened tensions in West Asia.

US-Iran War May Resume

Axios, citing a senior US official and a source, reported that the White House believed Iran’s 14-point peace proposal was not a meaningful improvement and was “insufficient" for a deal, as it only contained token improvements from its last version.

Earlier, Reuters reported that Iran sent a new 14-point peace proposal to the US with terms that appeared similar to offers Washington has previously rejected. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that Tehran’s views had been “conveyed to the American side through Pakistan" but gave no details.

The US reaction comes as Trump is reportedly considering resuming the war against Iran due to Tehran’s rejection of many of his demands and refusal to make meaningful concessions on its nuclear programme.
