In a bluff warning to India, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Thursday said that any future confrontation with Islamabad would be met with a “swift, calibrated, and decisive" response.
Asif’s remarks came in response to statements by India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who cautioned that any “misadventure" by India’s neighbour would invite an “unprecedented and decisive" reaction.
Speaking at an event in Kerala, Singh on Thursday said that following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, India had destroyed the terrorist hideouts and infrastructure in Pakistan. He contended that during Operation Sindoor, Indian forces brought Pakistan to its knees within 22 minutes.
“After the terror attack in Pahalgam, Indian soldiers brought Pakistan to its knees in just 22 minutes during Operation Sindoor. This was the biggest operation against terrorism in the Indian military history. The operation is not over yet. If any mischief is carried out from across the border, not only will a befitting response be given, but there will be unprecedented action," he said during the event.
Khwaja Asif Reacts
Responding on X, Khawaja Asif criticised the tone of these statements, calling them part of a pattern, news agency PTI reported.
“Such threat-mongering is not new; it is part of a predictable pattern – externalising internal fragility, and attempting to provoke escalation under the garb of unsubstantiated allegations for vested political interests." Recalling the four-day conflict in May, the Pakistani minister said that history was a stark reminder that miscalculation has consequences.
He warned that any future escalation would be met with a stronger response from Pakistan.
“The next time our response will be even more forceful and decisive. Let there be no ambiguity: Pakistan remains committed to peace and regional stability, but its resolve to defend sovereignty is absolute, its preparedness complete, and its response will be swift, calibrated, and decisive," he said.
Operation Sindoor
In the early hours of May 7, 2025, Indian Defence Forces launched precision strikes at nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under “Operation Sindoor" in response to the dastardly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.
In its initial phase, the Indian Air Force focused on dismantling terror camps linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes killed over 100 terrorists, including 10 family members of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar and four close aides.
But when Pakistan attempted a retaliatory military response, including plans to target Indian cities and key installations, India escalated. In a decisive second phase, carried out on the night of May 9–10, Indian forces struck a string of major Pakistani airbases, including Nur Khan, Sargodha, Jacobabad, Murid, and Rafiqui, inflicting damage that Islamabad is still struggling to account for publicly.
The operation sparked four days of cross-border fighting involving fighter jets, missiles and artillery.
