US President Donald Trump on Thursday sacked Attorney General Pam Bondi, capping months of growing frustration over her performance, particularly linked to her handling of the Epstein files. Bondi became the second high-ranking Trump administration official to be replaced after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was ousted in March.

Bondi’s removal marks the end of a year-long tenure atop the Justice Department, marked by failed efforts to prosecute her favoured targets and the Trump administration’s growing frustration over her performance. Deputy Attorney General Todd ‌Blanche, a former personal lawyer to Trump, will lead the Justice Department temporarily.

“Leading President Trump’s historic and highly successful efforts to make America safer and more secure has been the honour of a lifetime, and easily the most consequential first year of the Department of Justice in American history," Bondi said on X after her firing, adding that she will remain “eternally grateful" to Trump.

Why Did Trump Fire Bondi?

During her tenure as US Attorney General, Bondi became a firebrand enforcer of Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) agenda and pushed hundreds of veteran lawyers out of the Justice Department, pursued indictments of Trump’s adversaries and dropped cases against his allies. She had been accused of converting the Justice Department from a politically neutral body into an organisation dedicated to serving Trump’s aggressive policies.

However, Bondi attracted widespread criticism for her handling of the files related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Shortly after beginning her tenure, Bondi claimed she had a list of Epstein’s clients on her desk, but months later, she claimed there was no client list and announced that no further material would be released. That eventually led to a bipartisan law to release nearly all the files.

Bondi was accused of covering up or mismanaging the release of the Epstein files, and repeated criticism from Trump allies and Republican lawmakers ultimately became the death knell of her tenure. Trump had informed Bondi at a White House meeting on Wednesday that he was looking to replace her, Reuters reported, after Trump allies had encouraged him to “rip off the Band-Aid" and fire her.

Trump had complained to aides repeatedly in recent weeks about Attorney General Pam Bondi, describing her as weak and an ineffective enforcer of his agenda, according to the Wall Street Journal in January. According to a report by NBC News, Trump had grown “more and more frustrated" with Bondi, adding that while he likes her as a person, he did not think she “executed on his vision" in the way that he wanted. Reports also suggested that the duo had a heated confrontation in the White House last week.

Reports also suggested that Trump had grown increasingly frustrated with Bondi’s inability to secure successful prosecutions against high-profile political adversaries, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

When Bondi ‘Begged’ Trump Not To Fire Her

Bondi, 60, had pleaded with Trump to keep her job, begging him to give her more time in a dramatic White House showdown after the latter informed her that she would be leaving the Justice Department, a senior administration source told the Daily Mail. “She was unhappy and tried to change his mind," as per the source.

Another aspect of Bondi’s firing was revealed to be linked with Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell, after reports suggested that she was fired for leaking sensitive information. FBI Director Kash Patel had been personally involved in the effort to release files related to Swalwell’s past association with suspected Chinese spy Christine Fang, although Swalwell has insisted that he cut off all ties.

It is believed that Bondi tipped off Eric Swalwell about the FBI’s efforts to release investigative documents. However, Swalwell denied being alerted by Bondi, saying, “An administration that is now at 33% approval is looking to blame anyone but the right people – themselves."

A senior Trump administration source also denied claims that Bondi was fired because Trump thought she was responsible for this leak, telling the New York Post that “the president has been considering this change for a long time."
