Praising India’s diplomatic engagement amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, Dr Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, the representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in India, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi held multiple productive conversations with the Iranian leadership and lauded the Indian people for their warmth and goodwill.
Responding to a question on India’s role during the US-Iran conflict, Ilahi said that PM Modi had spoken with Iran’s president “three times or more," describing the discussions as “very good."
He added that India’s External Affairs Minister had also held several successful talks with his Iranian counterpart.
Speaking emotionally, Ilahi praised Indians, calling them “extraordinary people," and said he struggled to find words to express his admiration for them.
In an interview with ANI, Ilahi stressed that Iran had no desire to enter into conflict with its neighbours. He alleged, however, that the United States used military bases located in Arab countries to carry out attacks on Iran.
“Iran and the United States have agreed to a two-week ceasefire. We did not want this war; it was imposed on us," Ilahi said.
He claimed that those who initiated the conflict believed Iran could be subdued within days but later realised that attacks on Iranian civilians and residential areas were a grave mistake.
Reiterating Tehran’s position, Ilahi said Iran had no intention of harming civilians or destabilising neighbouring Arab nations.
“The United States did not attack us from Washington or New York. They used bases in Arab countries. Missiles that struck civilian targets, including a school in Minab, originated from those countries," he alleged, adding that Iran only retaliated by targeting American military bases and not civilian infrastructure.
Ilahi expressed hope that Iran’s neighbours would better understand Tehran’s position and reiterated Iran’s desire for peaceful and constructive relations across the region.
