In a shocking incident, a pregnant woman was allegedly operated on under the light of mobile phone torches after a power outage disrupted a surgery at the District Civil Hospital in Haryana’s Palwal on Thursday night, raising concerns over patient safety and emergency preparedness.

The incident reportedly took place around 10 pm when the electricity supply failed in the operating theatre during the procedure. The hospital’s battery backup system also stopped functioning, forcing doctors to continue the surgery using mobile flashlights.

Despite the hospital being connected to a dedicated power line and having been upgraded from 100 to 200 beds in 2024, frequent power cuts and issues with backup systems have reportedly continued.

The hospital caters to around 2,000-3,000 patients every day and conducts 25-30 surgeries every month.

Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Sanjay Singh said the matter has come to his notice and an inquiry has been ordered to determine how the operation theatre lost power during the procedure.
