As the nation observes the seventh anniversary of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack on Saturday, one of the deadliest strikes on security forces in recent history, authorities have heightened security across Jammu and Kashmir.
Security forces conducted extensive checks in Srinagar and other parts of the Union Territory. In the commercial hub of Lal Chowk, police teams conducted surprise inspections at hotels on Friday, verifying guests’ identification documents and examining their luggage. Similar vigilance measures were reported from Kulgam and other districts, with the region placed on high alert.
All About Pulwama Terror Attack
On February 14, 2019, a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Pulwama district, killing 40 personnel and injuring many others. The attack sent shockwaves across the country and triggered a sharp escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan.
In response to the strike, the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out air operations on February 26, 2019, targeting terror infrastructure in Balakot, Pakistan. The following day, an aerial engagement between the two sides led to the capture of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman after his MiG-21 Bison aircraft was shot down across the Line of Control. He was later released and returned to India.
Pulwama Terror Attack: Tributes Pour In
Political leaders across the spectrum paid homage to the fallen soldiers. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath saluted the “brave sons of Mother India" and reiterated the resolve to eradicate terrorism.
“Salutations to all the brave sons of Mother India who made the supreme sacrifice in the cowardly terrorist attack in Pulwama. The sacrifice of our immortal soldiers is the proclamation of that invincible resolve of Indian valour, which forever inspires us to eradicate terrorism from its roots," CM Adityanath tweeted.
Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan and Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar also remembered the martyrs, calling their sacrifice a lasting inspiration for a stronger and more secure nation.
“I pay homage to the brave personnel who laid down their lives in the Pulwama terror attack. Their supreme sacrifice will forever remain etched in the nation’s memory and continues to inspire us to build a strong and secure India," Vice-President Radhakrishnan wrote in a post on X.
“The Pulwama Attack claimed the lives of our brave CRPF personnel, but their spirit lives on. Their courage reminds us of the price of peace and the strength of our unity. On this Black Day, we honour their sacrifice and keep their memory alive," Shivakumar tweeted.
