Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for supporting Tehran during the ongoing war in West Asia, saying his messages and the support of the Russian people for Iran inspired the country.

“President Putin’s messages and the support of the Russian people inspire us in this war. The resistance and courage of the Iranian people promise new bonds that will ensure the security of East Asia by the countries of the region. On behalf of the people of Iran, I thank the government and people of Russia," he said on X.

Putin has condemned the US-Israeli strikes on Iran and publicly reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Tehran, amid mounting questions over how committed Russia really is to backing Iran during its current crisis. Putin has also condemned the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling it a “cynical" murder.

Pezeshkian’s remarks also came amid several reports that Russia was sharing intelligence with Iran to help it attack US facilities in West Asia. The Financial Times reported earlier that Russia is close to completing a phased shipment of drones, medicine and food to Iran.

The report claimed that Russia and Iran reportedly began secretly discussing delivering drones days after Israel and the US attacked Tehran. Moscow had been providing Iran with “crucial support" including satellite imagery, targeting data, and intelligence to aid its attacks on regional bases.

However, the Kremlin on Thursday called the report “lies". Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “There are so many lies being spread by the media… Do not pay attention to them."

The Washington Post reported earlier this month that Moscow had passed sensitive intelligence to Tehran, including the locations of US warships and aircraft in the region. Asked about the reports of Russia sharing intelligence with Iran, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said President Trump was “well aware of who’s talking to who," and that “anything that shouldn’t be happening, whether it’s in public or back-channeled, is being confronted and confronted strongly."

The European Union also accused Russia of providing intelligence support to Iran in the Middle East war to “kill Americans", calling on the United States to increase pressure on Moscow.

“We see that Russia is helping Iran with intelligence to target Americans, to kill Americans, and Russia is also supporting Iran now with the drones so that they can attack neighbouring countries and also US military bases," the EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas told journalists at a G7 meeting outside Paris.
