As many as 198 men, including 115 minors, were caught by Rachakonda SHE Teams over the past fortnight for harassing women in public spaces. From 1 to 15 July, 229 complaints were received by the women’s safety wing, and action was taken based on the nature of each incident.
Of the 229 complaints received, 40 involved phone harassment, 85 were related to social media abuse, and 104 were direct cases of public harassment. Five complaints led to criminal cases, 74 were formally recorded, and 122 resulted in counselling. Counselling was conducted at the LB Nagar CP Camp Office, in the presence of families and counsellors.
In one case, a hotel cook was arrested after he harassed his former employer by sending obscene messages and images. The accused had earlier been sacked for misbehaving and turning up drunk at work. After his dismissal, he began to send abusive and obscene material to the woman, leading to a criminal case and his arrest.
In another case, a man working at a metro station repeatedly harassed his married female colleague, insisting she be in a relationship with him. She made it clear she was not interested, but the harassment continued. He was eventually arrested after a complaint was filed.
At the Yadagirigutta bus stand, officers responded to reports of nuisance and arrested a group of men causing trouble in the area. SHE Teams also carried out surprise checks in Hyderabad Metro trains and caught seven men travelling in the women’s compartments. Fines were imposed by metro officials.
Rachakonda Commissioner of Police G. Sudheer Babu, said the police would not tolerate harassment in any form. “There will be strict action. SHE Teams are on the ground, at bus stands, metro stations, colleges, and public places, watching and acting,” he said. Teams in plain clothes are carrying out decoy operations, arresting offenders and producing them in court.
