Colonel A.M. Gnanakan, who retired after a distinguished career in the Indian Army, died in Belagavi on Monday. He was 87.
Born in 1938, Col. Gnanakan was an officer of the 14 Grenadiers. He led his battalion with courage and conviction during the 1962, 1965 and 1971 wars.
He served in sensitive and challenging regions, including NEFA and Jammu and Kashmir.
After retiring from active service, Col. Gnanakan settled down in Belagavi. He continued to provide leadership to several organisations.
For the past 25 years, he led St. Mary’s Church, playing a pivotal role in strengthening its spiritual and community life.
He also spearheaded the recent renovation of the historic church building, a significant restoration undertaken after 165 years, ensuring that its legacy endures for the future generations.
He also served as Resident Director (North Karnataka and Kolhapur region) of the Bombay Diocesan Trust Association Pvt. Ltd., said a release.
