Several matches at the U23 European Wrestling Championships in Zrenjanin, Serbia, were high octane, but one of them turned into one of the tournament’s most talked-about moments.
Bozigit Islamgereev found himself trailing France’s Rakhim Magamadov on the scoreboard. As time was about to run out and defeat looming, the Russian wrestler chose a bold solution. His presence of mind instantly electrified the arena.Islamgereev launched into the air and executed wrestling’s famous “flying squirrel” maneuver. The move flipped the match in seconds. He somersaulted over his opponent, locked in an inverted body grip while landing.
Then used his momentum to drive Magamadov onto his back. Officials awarded the decisive points, sealing a dramatic 10-8 victory that pushed Islamgereev forward in the competition.

Trailing on points moments earlier, Islamgereev converted the risky attempt into a match-winning move.
The victory advanced him into the freestyle bracket at 86 kilograms.The move itself has a unique history. American Greco-Roman wrestler Ellis Coleman popularized the flying squirrel technique more than a decade ago. Coleman developed the maneuver during training sessions and later used it in international competition. The daring somersault quickly became one of wrestling’s most recognizable high-risk attacks.
