RAIPUR: Seven workers suffered burns after a fire broke out in a turbine unit of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district on Tuesday morning, triggering panic and a swift emergency response.The incident occurred at the STG-4 (Steam Turbo Generator-4) turbine in the plant’s power and blowing station-2. Officials said the fire led to heavy smoke filling the turbine hall, forcing employees and workers to evacuate the area.Plant fire services rushed to the spot soon after the alert, and multiple fire tenders were deployed to control the blaze. The fire was brought under control within about an hour, and the affected section was later cooled and secured.BSP officials in a statement said workers present in the main switchgear room and control room were safely evacuated. However, during the rush to exit the area, several workers sustained injuries.At least seven workers — including two regular employees and five contract workers — were injured and shifted to Sector-9 hospital in Bhilai. While some suffered burn injuries, one contract worker sustained a fracture, officials said.
All are currently undergoing treatment and are stated to be stable.There was no loss of life, officials confirmed.While eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise in the turbine section before the fire spread, authorities have not confirmed any explosion and said the exact cause of the incident would be established after a detailed investigation.Senior officials of the plant and district administration reached the spot soon after the incident and monitored the firefighting and rescue operations.
Security within the plant has been tightened as a precaution.The incident caused a brief scare, with thick smoke visible across parts of the plant, but a major mishap was averted due to the prompt response of the firefighting teams.A probe has been initiated to ascertain the cause of the fire and assess the extent of damage.
