State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) Chairperson Alexander Thomas has ordered the Health department to urgently examine the inadequacy of basic facilities at Government Maharaja’s Taluk Hospital at Karuvelipady.

The Commission asked the Director of Health Services (DHS), and the District Medical Officer (DMO) to conduct an investigation into the matter by deputing the Additional Director of Health Services and the Deputy DMO. The action was taken in a case registered by the Commission based on a newspaper report.

The Commission said that the lack of basic facilities and shortage of doctors at the hospital should be examined. If beds and treatment facilities are inadequate, they should be addressed.

The hospital premises should be examined for the presence of stray dogs and reptiles. If there is no compound wall, one should be built. The Principal Secretary of the Health department should assess the progress of construction of the new block at the hospital and submit a report within a month, the Commission added.
