State explores academic tie-up with Australia’s James Cook University

Bhubaneswar: Odisha on Wednesday explored a wider academic and research collaboration with Australia’s James Cook University, with discussions focusing on joint PhD programmes, student and faculty exchanges, and the possibility of establishing an international campus in the state.Higher education minister Suryabanshi Suraj said the talks aimed at creating world-class opportunities in the state’s higher education sector and strengthening its position as a major centre for research and innovation.The minister said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed among James Cook University, Fakir Mohan University in Balasore and Berhampur University would open new avenues in marine biotechnology for students and researchers.

The collaboration is expected to enhance advanced research, academic exposure and international engagement in emerging marine science disciplines.A two-member delegation from the Australian university met science and technology minister Krushna Chandra Patra and discussed the state govt’s Odisha Marine Biotechnology Research and Innovation Corridor (OMBRIC) project and possible technical support from the university.

Officials and experts reviewed the Samudra Manthan project and its future roadmap.Patra said James Cook University, a knowledge partner of the science and technology department, could contribute in areas like seaweed and seagrass research, ecosystem restoration, pollution control, mangrove conservation and horseshoe crab protection. The team met chief secretary Anu Garg and officials from several departments regarding collaborative projects.The delegation is scheduled to meet authorities of the Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, IIT Bhubaneswar, IISER Berhampur, Berhampur University and other institutions linked to the OMBRIC project.
