In a strange incident, stray dogs mauled a leopard cub to death in Kadapa district on Tuesday. The incident happened in the agricultural fields near Chinna Bakarapuram in Duvvur mandal, where the carcass of the leopard cub was spotted by local villagers in the early hours of the day.
It remains unclear how the six-month-old cub strayed into the residential localities, but Deputy Forest Range Officer (Vontimitta) Anwar Hussain suspects that the cub may have gotten separated from its mother and wandered out of the woods.
Upon receiving an alert from the local farmers, Mr. Hussain, along with Forest Beat Officer Sucharita, rushed to the spot and shifted the carcass to Duvvur Veterinary Hospital for postmortem.
According to a forest official, stray dogs cornered and pounced upon the lonely cub, mauling the animal to death. Suspecting that the leopardess might be on the prowl in the area, the forest department advised villagers to stay vigilant and alert officials if they sighted any wild animals.
