A woman was brutally assaulted, gang-raped by her husband and her friends in Surat, and narrowly escaped death after they allegedly attempted to kill her by throwing her into the Tapi river, according to a report.
All four people involved in the incident were arrested by the Kapodara Police.
The main accused was identified as Ganesh Rajput, 35, who allegedly assaulted his wife with a stick and a hammer on July 24 over a suspicion of an extramarital affair, India Today reported.
On the next morning, the husband and his aide, Prince Kumar, 22, kidnapped her and took her to a rented room in Deendayal Nagar. The two men allegedly raped her there and assaulted her brutally, hitting her with a pipe on her head, the report said.
The situation worsened when Ganesh called two more men for help — Vijay, also known as Kachyo Ishwarbhai Rathod (29), and Appa Jagannath Waghmare (39). The four accused took the injured woman in an autorickshaw to a water tank near the Tapi river. There, they tied her hands and legs with ropes and tried to drown her. Despite being badly hurt and close to death, the woman survived and managed to reach Kapodara police station to report the crime.
The cops registered a case of gang rape and attempted murder, and constituted teams to nab the accused. They arrested them within hours. The police have assured a detailed investigation into the incident, according to the report.
Main accused Ganesh Rajput, a driver from Tamil Nadu, has 26 cases against him in Surat. The others — Mahesh from Uttar Pradesh, Vijay from Gujarat, and Appa from Maharashtra — are from different parts of the country.
The woman is currently receiving medical attention.
