A 38-year-old woman councillor in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district was allegedly hacked to death by her husband over suspicion of illicit affair on Thursday. The incident has sent shock waves across the district.
The deceased has been identified as S Gomathi, councillor of ward 26 in Thirunindravur municipality in Nadukuthagai in the district.
The accused husband, Stephen Raj, surrendered to police after the crime.
It is learnt that both the husband and wife were members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). The couple, married for around 10 years and parents to four children, had reportedly been having frequent quarrels over Gomathi’s friendship with another man.
According to media reports, upon learning that she was meeting the man again on Thursday, Stephen confronted her. Soon after a heated argument ensued between the couple and in a fit of rage, the husband attacked the victim with a hidden weapon, leaving her grievously injured.
Soon, Gomathi succumbed to her injuries.
The Thiruvallur police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Gomathi’s body was sent to the Thiruvallur Government Hospital for postmortem.
