US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would try to attend the wedding of his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, but admitted the timing was difficult because of the ongoing Iran war.
Donald Trump Jr, popularly known as Don Jr, is expected to marry Bettina Anderson this weekend in the Bahamas in what US media described as a private ceremony. The 48-year-old will be tying the knot for the second time.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said his son wanted him to be present at the ceremony, but the conflict with Iran and other pressing matters could make it difficult.
“He’d like me to go. It’s going to be just a small little private affair and I’m going to try and make it," Trump said.
“I said, ‘This is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things.'"
Trump also joked about the political and media scrutiny surrounding his possible attendance at the wedding while the Iran conflict remains unresolved.
“That’s one I can’t win on. If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend, I get killed — by the fake news of course," Trump said.
“Hopefully they’re going to have a great marriage."
Don Jr serves as executive vice president of The Trump Organization, the family’s luxury real estate conglomerate, and a vocal proponent of his father’s right-wing MAGA political agenda.
He is often seen at his father’s side, including earlier this month when they returned to the White House together from Trump senior’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Last year, Don Jr had said he could consider a presidential run “maybe one day." Trump’s second term as president is scheduled to continue until January 2029, and he has not publicly named a political successor.
