In a tragic incident, two girls were electrocuted in Navi Mumbai on Friday when a live wire dropped on a waterlogged road they were walking on. The incident happened under the LP Bridge near the Bikaner restaurant in the city.

The two girls were rushed to DY Patil Hospital in a rickshaw for urgent medical treatment.

Mumbai and its suburbs have been witnessing continuous heavy rainfall over the last few days. It was a short circuit that caused the live wire to drop into the water.

The girls fell on the ground immediately upon coming in contact with the water on the road and getting electrocuted.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai has recorded above-average rainfall activity since the onset of the monsoon this season. The city has been experiencing intermittent heavy to very heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving intense downpours within short durations.

The IMD has repeatedly issued yellow and orange alerts for Mumbai and its surrounding districts, cautioning residents about the likelihood of waterlogging, traffic disruptions and hazards related to exposed infrastructure. Officials have noted that such concentrated rainfall events increase the risk of urban flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

In the past week, several parts of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai have reported water accumulation on roads, railway tracks and residential areas, affecting both road and rail traffic. Suburban train services, considered the city’s lifeline, have also faced delays due to waterlogged tracks in certain sections. Civic agencies have claimed that desilting and drainage work was carried out ahead of the monsoon, but recurring instances of flooding have raised concerns over the effectiveness of these measures.

Last month, a man had fallen into a manhole right when the mayor had come out to inspect the city’s preparedness for the monsoon season. At the time, the mayor had sternly asked officials to ensure that such accidents should not occur.

The incident drew immediate attention, prompting a strong reaction from the mayor. Authorities were instructed to secure open drains and manholes, especially in waterlogged areas where they are difficult to spot.

This is not an isolated incident. Earlier, on Wednesday night, a 65-year-old woman was reportedly electrocuted in much the same way when she walked on a water-logged road. There was electricity running through the water as a live wire had dropped onto it.
