Two persons and fifteen cows were injured after the van that was carrying the animals overturned when a SETC bus hit the vehicle from behind at Pachakuppam village near Ambur town in Tirupattur on Chennai - Bengaluru Highway (NH 44) on Thursday.
Police said Ahmed Pasha (52) was a dairy farmer in Paradarami village near Gudiyatham town in Vellore. He owns around 20 cows and 10 goats in his two-acre farmland in the village. As part of an annual checkup for animals, Pasha had hired a van to transport cows to a veterinary clinic in Ambur.
On Thursday, driver N. Sethu (28) and Pasha were heading to the clinic on the stretch when a government bus driver V. Palani (48) allegedly lost control of the vehicle and hit the van from behind. The bus was proceeding towards Salem from Tirupati with around 30 commuters.
In the impact, the van overturned on the stretch. Two occupants including Pasha and 15 cows were injured. Immediately, passersby rushed to the spot and rescued injured persons. Based on the alert, Ambur Taluk police inspected the spot and a case was registered. Police said that drowsiness of the bus driver could have been the reason for the accident. Further probe is underway.
