A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) training aircraft crashed near Mardan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday, killing both pilots on board and injuring three civilians on the ground, officials said.
The aircraft went down during a routine training mission in an open area near Mardan. According to Pakistani authorities, the crash triggered a fire and caused damage to nearby property, leaving three civilians injured. The injured were shifted to a hospital for treatment.
In a statement, the military identified the deceased pilots as Flight Lieutenant Muhammad Qasim Abdullah of the Pakistan Air Force and Lieutenant Taha Abbasi of the Pakistan Navy.
Inquiry Ordered Into Crash
The Pakistan military said a board of inquiry has been constituted to determine the cause of the accident.
Officials have not yet disclosed the type of aircraft involved or provided details about what may have led to the crash.
Emergency services and local authorities rushed to the scene shortly after the aircraft went down, with rescue teams securing the area and assisting those affected.
Condolences From Pakistan’s Leadership
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir expressed condolences over the deaths of the two officers.
In separate statements, the country’s top leadership paid tribute to the pilots and extended sympathies to their families.
Another Military Aviation Mishap
The crash comes days after a Pakistan Army helicopter crashed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, killing 22 soldiers. The military had attributed that incident to a technical fault.
Military aviation accidents occur periodically in Pakistan, although details regarding investigations and their findings are seldom made public.
The latest crash is likely to raise fresh questions about flight safety and maintenance practices within Pakistan’s armed forces, particularly as it follows another major military aviation tragedy within a week.
