Tyson Fury says the tragic deaths of two close friends of long-time rival Anthony Joshua played a key role in his decision to return to boxing.
Fury will end a 15-month absence on April 11 when he faces Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
It will be his first fight since consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk, including a points loss in December 2024 that cost him a shot at three of the four major heavyweight belts.
The 37-year-old went a full calendar year without fighting before announcing his comeback on January 4.
That decision, as per Fury himself, followed a car crash in Nigeria involving Joshua in December, which killed his close friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.
“Tomorrow might not ever come, and I suppose the biggest turning point in this comeback for me was the tragedy that happened with Anthony Joshua," Fury said Monday.
“You should never put things off until tomorrow, or next year, or next week, because tomorrow is not promised to nobody."
‘Make Boxing Great Again’
Any long-anticipated Fury-Joshua showdown appears shelved for now. Instead, Fury insists his focus is bigger.
“The truth of the matter is I came back for one reason only, and that’s to make boxing great again," he said.
“Since I’ve retired for the fifth time over a year ago, boxing for me has gone on a downward slope, and it’s become quite boring."
A former two-time world heavyweight champion, Fury believes he still has unfinished business. Whether this comeback fuels another title run or sets up one final blockbuster payday remains unclear.
April 11 will offer the first real answer and show how serious this latest “Return of the Mac" truly is.
