'Unauthorised': BJP Assam Sacks Social Media Member After AI Video Shows Himanta Aiming Gun At Men

The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) removed one of four co-conveners from its social media department following backlash over a video that depicted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma aiming a rifle at two men. The video, posted last Saturday on the official X handle of Assam BJP with the caption “Point blank shot", was deleted the following day. The post showed digitally manipulated images of the Chief Minister appearing to shoot at a photograph of the two men, concluding with an image of Himanta BiswaSarma dressed as a cowboy wielding a gun.

Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia confirmed the removal to The Indian Express, characterizing the post as an “immature" and “unauthorised" action.

“The party is concerned about illegal immigrant Bangladeshis in Assam, and for that, there has to be a movement in the society. But the party does not support the idea of a mala fide intent of targeting Muslims with bullets. It was mishandled by an immature and unauthorised person," Saikia stated.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma distanced himself from the video, claiming no prior knowledge of its creation or posting.

“We have registered an FIR," he said, referring to a complaint filed by Congress MLAs, adding, “In fact, one of our BJP people has also filed a case, saying that this is a video about which we are angry because in Assam, everybody knows that we are not against Assamese Muslims. We are against Bangladeshi Muslims, whom we call Miya Muslims."

This controversy marks the second time in recent months that the Assam BJP’s X handle has faced scrutiny. In September 2025, the account posted an AI-generated video titled “Assam without BJP", accompanied by text references to “beef legalisation" and “illegal immigrants." The Supreme Court subsequently issued a notice in October on a petition seeking removal of the video.
