A head constable was allegedly shot dead by a government primary school teacher following a dispute over a cricket match in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district, officials said on Tuesday. The accused was arrested after a brief encounter with the police.
The incident took place in Sunheda village. The victim, identified as Head Constable Ajay Panwar, was posted in Saharanpur and was on a month-long leave in his native village.
Police said Ajay had an argument with the accused, Mohit, a government school teacher from the same village, during a local cricket match a few days ago. On Monday evening, Ajay was out for a walk when he had another heated exchange with Mohit. The argument escalated and Mohit allegedly opened fire, killing Ajay on the spot.
Following the murder, Baghpat Superintendent of Police Suraj Rai formed four teams to track down the suspect. Acting on a tip-off, police traced Mohit to a field near the village. When confronted, Mohit allegedly fired at the police. In retaliatory firing, he was shot in the leg and overpowered.
The injured accused was taken to the district hospital for treatment. Police said further investigation into the matter is underway.
