A woman’s sudden disappearance from her home in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district triggered panic, speculation and an intensive police investigation, as unusual objects found at the scene fuelled rumours in the village.

The incident was reported from Singanpur village, where the 20-year-old woman was last seen on Sunday night. Family members said she went to bed as usual, but by morning she was nowhere to be found. When her mother entered the room to wake her up, the bed was empty. Her clothes and jewellery had been neatly left behind, and a long piece of what appeared to be shed snake skin was found lying next to them, NDTV reported.

The discovery quickly led to whispers of supernatural explanations among locals, with some villagers claiming the woman could be an “ichchadhari naagin", a mythical shape-shifting serpent. These claims gained further traction after a snake burrow was noticed in the floor of the room. The family acknowledged that snakes had been seen in the house area earlier as well.

Amid the growing speculation, the woman’s family appealed for help, saying they were distraught and only wanted her to return safely.

Police teams reached the village soon after receiving the complaint. Ajitmal Circle Officer Manoj Gangwar said a case had been registered under Section 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on the basis of the father’s statement. Multiple teams have been formed to trace the missing woman, and search operations are under way, he added.

The police have strongly dismissed claims of any supernatural angle. Gangwar said the rumours circulating in the village were baseless and were diverting attention from the investigation. He added that the snake skin and abandoned belongings could have been placed intentionally to confuse investigators or mislead locals.

As part of the probe, police have seized mobile phones from the household and are examining call records and digital data to reconstruct the woman’s movements and contacts. Officers have also urged residents not to spread rumours and to cooperate with the investigation as efforts continue to locate the missing woman.
