A 28-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district just days after his wife, too, took her life, police said on Friday. His body was found hanging from a mango tree about half a kilometre from his house.
The man has been identified as Mithun Rawat. His wife, Radhika, had allegedly died by suicide following a domestic dispute nine days earlier. The woman's body was found hanging inside the couple's house on May 5.
They had had a love marriage nearly two years ago and were living separately from their families. According to villagers and his family members, Mithun was emotionally shattered after losing his wife. He used to drive pickup vehicles for a living.
However, earlier this month, Mithun and Radhika got into an argument over the payment of instalments of a loan for a pickup truck that he had purchased in the hopes of a prosperous life for them.
Radhika took the extreme step after this particular argument. On Thursday, May 14, a day after a ritual was conducted in Radhika's memory, Mithun, too, allegedly died by suicide.
Police said that the man left his home at around 7 am that day. When he did not return for a long time, his family began searching for him and later found him hanging from a mango tree.
After receiving information, police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.
