Donald Trump said countries dependent on the Strait of Hormuz should protect their own energy supply routes, stating the US has “nothing to do with that.”

US President Donald Trump said the United States will not take responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that countries dependent on the key oil transit route should manage their own interests.
“And if France or some other country wants to get oil or gas, they’ll go up through the Strait and the Hormuz Strait. They’ll go right up there, and they’ll be able to fend for themselves."
“I think it’ll be very safe, actually, but we have nothing to do with that," Trump said.
“What happens to the Strait, we’re not going to have anything to do with because these countries, China, will go up and they’ll fuel up their beautiful ships and they’ll leave and they’ll take care of themselves. There’s no reason for us to do it," he added.
According to the Associated Press (AP), Trump told reporters Tuesday that responsibility for keeping the Strait open should lie with countries that rely on the waterway rather than the United States.
He also criticised allies for not doing more to support Washington’s war effort, saying there is “no reason for us to do this" and that countries should “go get your own oil."
Trump’s remarks come as the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran continues to intensify across the Middle East.
AP reported that US and Israeli forces launched a fresh wave of strikes targeting Tehran early Tuesday, while Iran has continued deploying drones and missiles despite a reduced pace of attacks compared to the early phase of the war.
The broader conflict has killed more than 3,000 people across the region and displaced millions in Iran and Lebanon, according to the AP report.
The war has also widened to include tensions involving the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, with Israeli strikes reported in Beirut.
Reuters cited Lebanese authorities as saying at least seven people were killed and 24 wounded in two strikes in the Beirut area.
TRUMP SIGNALS POSSIBLE END TO MILITARY OPERATIONS
Trump indicated the United States may conclude its military campaign in Iran within weeks.
The US President said Washington could finish the conflict “within maybe two weeks, maybe three," adding that a diplomatic agreement with Tehran is not a prerequisite for ending hostilities.
“We’ll be leaving very soon," Trump said.
Despite previously listing multiple objectives for the war, Trump said he had “one goal: They will have no nuclear weapon, and that goal has been attained," though he did not explain how that conclusion was reached.
He also warned that the US could intensify strikes if negotiations fail, saying potential targets include infrastructure such as bridges.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said talks were continuing but emphasised Washington remained prepared to pursue military options if Iran does not comply with US demands.
US TROOP CASUALTIES AND ECONOMIC IMPACT
The conflict has resulted in significant casualties among US forces.
AP reported that 348 American service members have been wounded since the start of the war, with six suffering serious injuries.
Thirteen US troops have been killed in combat.
The war has also affected global energy markets, pushing fuel prices higher.
According to AP, US gasoline prices crossed $4 per gallon for the first time since 2022 as the conflict disrupted supply chains.
Analysts say rising fuel costs could also increase prices for goods, including groceries, due to higher transportation and packaging expenses.
Divisions among US allies have also emerged during the conflict.
Reuters reported that France and Italy have pushed back against certain US-Israeli military operations, highlighting differences within Western allies as the war continues into its fifth week.
