Tamil Nadu-born Rini Sampath has emerged as the first South Asian candidate for the election to elect the mayor of Washington DC.

Sampath, a 31-year-old government contractor from the Democratic Party, has her election campaign themed on ‘Fix the Basics’ and the vows of “A new DC".

During her election campaigns, Sampath has highlighted her goal to fix the basic city services, asserting she’s “not a politician".

“I’m not a politician. I don’t owe any special interest groups. It’s time for an outsider who is relentlessly focused on fixing our basic city services," says the text on her campaign website.

“As Mayor of DC, my priority will be to make sure our city lives up to its basic commitments to our residents. Fill the potholes. Stop the catastrophic wastewater spill in the Potomac. Lower prices. Improve 911 wait times," she said.

Who Is Rini Sampath?

Born in Tamil Nadu’s Theni, Rini Sampath came to the United States as a seven-year-old and has been a resident of Washington DC for over a decade, PTI reports.

According to her LinkedIn profile, she studied international relations and security studies from the renowned University of Southern California.

Between June 2016 and July 2017, Sampath worked as the policy director at the National Campus Leadership Council under the Barack Obama administration.

She later served as a senior consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, a premier management and technology consulting firm specializing in serving U.S. government agencies.

At present, Sampath serves as the director of Tharros and is based in Washington DC.

About Washington Mayoral Polls

Washington DC, the US capital, is highly dominated by Democrats. The city has never seen a Republican mayor since the polls to the post kicked off in 1975.

The primary is scheduled for June 16, and the general election will be conducted on November 3.

Others in the fray are Janeese Lewis George, Kenyan McDuffie, Gary Goodweather, Robert L Gross and Rhonda Hamilton.
