Sinner, who claimed the Australian Open earlier this year, and Alcaraz, who secured the French Open title, will take each other on in the final of Wimbledon on Sunday.

Two-time reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz looks to defend his Wimbledon crown against World No.1 Jannik Sinner at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Sunday in the final between the duo.

Sinner claimed the Australian Open earlier this year, while Alcaraz secured the French Open title. The rise of these young players winning Grand Slam titles has sparked discussions about a shift in the sport from the era of the traditional top-three to the era of the young contenders.

Road To Final

Alcaraz commenced his campaign this season with a victory over Italian Fabio Fognini, followed by a win against Oliver Tarvet in the second round. German Jan-Lenard Struff was his next victim in the third round, and Alexandre Rublev fell in the Round of 16 to the defending champion. Alcaraz then eliminated another home favourite, Cameron Norrie, in the quarterfinals, dispatching the Brit in straight sets to secure his place in the semifinal, where he triumphed over American Taylor Fritz to reach the final.

Sinner began his grass court campaign by decisively defeating compatriot Luca Nardi in straight sets, followed by another dominant performance against Aleksandar Vukic. He maintained his straight-sets streak against Pedro Martinez in the third round and comfortably overcame Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the Round of 16. The top-ranked player, Sinner, continued his flawless record at the ongoing Wimbledon, securing another victory against American Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals, which set up a semifinal clash against Djokovic. Sinner sailed past the 24-time Grand Slam winner in straight sets, advancing to an exciting final against Alcaraz.

Records Could Tumble

The Spaniard secured his first-ever title at SW19 in the 2023 season, overcoming the experienced Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller. He then claimed his second title at the AELTC in dominant fashion, defeating Djokovic in three straight sets to successfully defend his crown.

Alcaraz has the chance to become the first-ever Spaniard to win Wimbledon’s Gentlemen’s Singles title three times, matching the legendary Rafael Nadal, who also has two titles each.

If Alcaraz wins Wimbledon after the French Open, he will join Bjorn Borg as the only male player in the Open Era to achieve the Channel Slam in consecutive years. Borg accomplished this feat from 1978 to 1980.

Additionally, Alcaraz could become just the third man in the 21st century, and fifth in the Open Era, to win Wimbledon three times consecutively. He would join Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who achieved this in the 21st century, and Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg, who did so in the Open Era.

Alcaraz is currently 5-for-5 in Grand Slam finals and a sixth straight triumph would extend his record win percentage and bring him one step closer to Richard Sears’ all-time record of 7-for-7 in Finals in the Amateur era.

Sinner Stats

The records weren’t solely Alcaraz’s to break; the 22-year-old Sinner became the youngest man to reach the final of four consecutive Grand Slam tournaments with his performance at SW19.

Sinner’s journey to the final also meant that he has reached the championship match at all four Grand Slam events, making him only the sixth man in the Open Era to achieve this, following in the footsteps of Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.

The Wimbledon championship clash between Sinner and Alcaraz is billed as a rematch of the French Open final, where the Spaniard triumphed over the Italian. At Roland Garros, Sinner led the final by two sets before Alcaraz fought back to win the title in a thrilling five-set match. However, the Italian hopes the game at SW19 will be a different contest.
