American 10th seed Ben Shelton advanced to his first Wimbledon quarter-final on Monday with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 7-5 win over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego, claiming not just the match, but also a piece of family history.
Shelton’s victory came 31 years after his father and current coach, Bryan Shelton, fell just short of the Wimbledon quarter-finals in a memorable five-set loss to Christian Bergstrom in 1993. That match marked the elder Shelton’s best Grand Slam performance.
The younger Shelton, 22, was slow to start, dropping his first set of the tournament. But he quickly regrouped, asserting his power and athleticism in the second. He charged the net with confidence and dictated play to level the match.
In the third set, Shelton dominated the tie-break with a burst of aggressive shot-making. He sealed the win in the fourth set with a brilliant final service game, breaking Sonego and letting out a triumphant roar.
It marked Shelton’s third win over Sonego this season, following victories at both the Australian Open and French Open.
Andreeva Becomes Youngest Women’s Quarter-Finalist Since 2005
Seventh-seeded Russian Mirra Andreeva stormed into her first Wimbledon quarter-final with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 win over American Emma Navarro, the 10th seed.
At just 18 years and 62 days, Andreeva becomes the youngest player to reach the women’s last eight at Wimbledon since Maria Sharapova in 2005, who did so at the exact same age.
Displaying poise well beyond her years, Andreeva took control early under swirling winds on Centre Court. She broke Navarro with a crisp backhand pass and never allowed the American to settle, dominating behind a serve that consistently topped 110 mph.
Andreeva didn’t drop a single point on her first serve in the opening set and converted her third set point with an unreturnable delivery after 30 minutes of play.
Navarro responded in the second set, trading baseline blows and earning a break of her own. But Andreeva maintained her edge, executing a deft lob to earn three match points and closing it out in style to secure a meeting with Swiss star Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals.
