Arnav Paparkar Powers into Wimbledon Second Round as Maaya Rajeshwaran Suffers Early Exit
LONODON: Arnav Paparkar enjoyed a dominant day on serve, firing two aces and dropping just seven points on his delivery as he cruised into the second round of the Wimbledon boys singles on Saturday.Paparkar, ranked No. 19 in the junior World Tennis rankings, defeated British wildcard Joshua Craze 6-2, 6-2.The 18-year-old from Pune, who may be playing his final junior event as he is yet to decide whether to compete at the season’s last Grand Slam, the US Open, had a healthy sprinkling of Indian supporters in the crowd.“I was a bit nervous at the start, but I think he was more nervous than me,” Paparkar said. “He didn't really start well, but I played really well from the start to the finish.”Next up for the Indian is third seed Keaton Hance of the United States.
Maaya falls
In the girls singles, 17-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, ranked No. 22 in the junior rankings and seeded 16th here, lost 5-7, 2-6 to Germany's Emily Victoria Eigelsbach despite making a strong start.Maaya led 3-1 and 5-3 in the opening set, but was broken while serving for it in the 10th game despite holding three set points.Eigelsbach, who was solid off both wings and mixed in a one-handed slice, reeled off four straight games to claim the first set before winning the opening three games of the second.
It was not Maaya's best performance. The 17-year-old finished with nine double faults and 37 unforced errors, and looked increasingly out of sorts as the match wore on.“I've played her twice before and beaten her both times, those were not easy matches,” Maaya said. “I think my approach towards playing her today, the game style that she has, was not good enough for me to win.”
