More than 8,000 runners across India laced up for a cause bigger than sport on Sunday as the 2026 edition of the Wings for Life World Run brought together communities in a powerful global movement dedicated to spinal cord injury research.
Organised by Red Bull, the event featured 19 organised App Runs across the country, with Mumbai emerging as one of the biggest hubs of participation.
Over 1,100 runners gathered at Gargi Plaza inside the KJ Somaiya Campus in Vidyavihar, turning the city into a celebration of resilience, inclusion and shared purpose.

Held simultaneously around the world, the run began at 4:30 PM IST, with participants joining both physically and virtually through the Wings for Life World Run app.
Participants from all age groups took part alongside specially-abled runners, reinforcing the campaign’s central message: “Running for those who can’t."
A Global Movement Beyond Sport
Globally, 346,527 officially registered participants from 192 nationalities across 173 countries took part in the 2026 edition. The event featured seven flagship run locations and 648 App Run events spread across 73 countries, while countless others joined independently worldwide.
Together, the initiative raised an extraordinary 69.7 million Euros, all of which will go directly toward spinal cord injury treatment and research.
Japan’s Jo Fukuda emerged as the men’s global winner after covering a remarkable 78.95 km in Fukuoka, while Mikky Keetels topped the women’s standings with 62.24 km in Breda, Netherlands.
In India, Samrat Putatunda claimed the men’s title in Kolkata with 33.11 km, while Mumbai’s Urmila Bane won the women’s category after covering 18.04 km.

“It Felt Like a Family"
Popular Indian gaming professional and Red Bull athlete Ankit Panth described the atmosphere in Mumbai as unforgettable.
“It’s not just a normal run but a whole experience," Panth said. “People were dancing while running, cheering each other on, helping wheelchair participants and just enjoying every moment together."

“It didn’t feel like a race. It felt like a family of runners coming together for a cause."
Adding further prestige to the event was Colin Jackson, the two-time world champion and Olympic silver medallist, who serves as the International Sports Director for the Wings for Life World Run.
