3-year-old black panther dies after falling on live wires at Collem

Ponda: A three-year-old black panther was electrocuted after falling onto live electric wires of a transformer while chasing prey at Sonauli-Collem, Dharbandora taluka.Forest guards discovered the panther’s carcass on Monday, around 12km from Collem village, within the dense Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary.According to Jiss Varkey, DCF wildlife in North Goa, the wild cat likely misjudged its jump from a tree, leading to its fatal encounter with the live wires. The carcass was located near a shrine dedicated to a Hindu deity.Postmortem examinations were carried out by veterinarians from the Usgao and Mollem animal dispensaries before cremation, as the species is protected under Schedule I of the law. A report detailing the autopsy findings is expected to be available in the coming days.
