Australian amateur player Jordan Smith became the first-ever champion of the inaugural One-Point Slam ahead of the Australian Open on Wednesday, which earned him a million dollars.
Smith got the better of Joanna Garland in the final of the novelty event at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne to get his hands on the AO 1 Point Slam crown.
Smith got the better of top-ranked stars including the likes of Jannik Sinner and Amanda Anisimova en route to the final while Garland made it to the final past big-name obstacles such as Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios.
The first-time event comprised 16 amateur players, eight wildcard entries and 24 pros including Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff to name a few.
The Rules:
At the AO 1 Point Slam, amateurs face pros for a single point fixture with the winner securing progress. The person to receive serve is decided on a round of Rock-Paper-Scissors, and the pros get a single serve while the amateurs get two.
