Amid current debates as to whether Carrick is the right man for Man United, Ronaldo had already delivered his verdict years ago, back in 2021.

Manchester United’s decision to appoint Michael Carrick as interim head coach has split opinion — but one powerful endorsement from the past is suddenly doing the rounds again.

And it comes from Cristiano Ronaldo.

As debates rage over whether the 44-year-old former Red Devil is the right man to steady United’s wobbling season, the club’s most iconic modern figure had already delivered his verdict years ago — back in December 2021, during Carrick’s short but impressive spell as caretaker manager.

Michael Carrick was a class act as a player and he can become a great coach as well. Nothing is impossible for this guy. Personally, I’m proud to have played with him by my side as well as with him as a manager on our bench. 🙌🏽👊🏽 pic.twitter.com/gCgxDcDQYw— Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) December 3, 2021

“Michael Carrick was a class act as a player, and he can become a great coach as well. Nothing is impossible for this guy. Personally, I’m proud to have played with him by my side as well as with him as a manager on our bench."

High praise, especially from a player known for his brutally high standards.

At the time, Carrick had just overseen an unbeaten three-game run, including wins over Villarreal and Arsenal, before handing over to Ralf Rangnick.

Now, he returns to Old Trafford in a moment of crisis.

The 44-year-old has been out of work since leaving Middlesbrough in June, but will now step straight into the fire — beginning with a Manchester derby against City on Sunday.

United have won just one of their last seven matches in all competitions, making Carrick’s task immediate and unforgiving.

Despite his limited managerial CV, United’s hierarchy views Carrick as a safe pair of hands: someone who understands the club’s DNA inside out.

He made 464 appearances, won multiple league titles and lifted the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson before serving as a coach under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United are three points off fourth-placed Liverpool and just one behind fifth-placed Brentford, with a top-five finish likely enough for Champions League qualification.
